Best Dog Spots in West Marin

West Marin is known as ‘Cow Heaven.’ According to my dog, Eli, it is also ‘Dog Heaven.’
I adopted Eli from the San Francisco SPCA on December 23, 2011. He had been found stray in Merced and had been at the San Francisco SPCA for weeks. He was skinny, sick and terrified. The shelter couldn’t get him to eat, walk or do much of anything. They were doubtful he was going to be a good candidate for adoption. I went to the SPCA to look at a dog I saw online, but as I was walking in, I took one look at Eli and it was true love! They tried to dissuade me from adopting him, but I was adamant. I took him to the peaceful oasis of Inverness, nursed him back to health and got him out on the trails. He has been the best companion – loving, fun, cute, patient, well-behaved, friendly… AND he helps me work off all the cheese I eat! Here are some of our favorite spots…

1. Millerton Point

One of my favorite spots for a quick nature recharge. A 20 minute loop with beautiful views of Tomales Bay. Stay high on the bluff or drop down to the beach for some (muddy) fetch in the water. A stunner at sunset!

2. Kehoe Beach

Ahhhh…Kehoe. This beach holds a very special place in my heart, as I used to go there with my grandparents often. A dramatic expanse of ocean: windy, foggy, raw, gorgeous. Bring lots of layers and be very careful near the water: dangerous surf!

3. Bolinas Ridge Trail

Considering my cow fetish, this is one of my favorites! Access the trail on Sir Francis Drake, just above Olema as you are heading towards Fairfax. The trail heads up into the ranchland and eventually gives you fantastic views of Black Mountain, Tomales Bay and the Inverness Ridge.

4. Chicken Ranch Beach

A fun little beach for a quick game of fetch. Very convenient spot for a picnic or a breath of fresh air.

5. Stinson Beach

A big beach with lots of dogs frolicking off-leash. A good one if you are feeling a bit more social.

6. Limantour Beach

A beautiful place for a long walk on the beach. Keep the leash at the ready – I’ve heard about rangers giving tickets for dogs off-leash.

7. Giocomini Wetlands

A lovely little loop right in Point Reyes Station around the iconic white barn. Veer off in the other direction and hang out on the banks of Lagunitas Creek. A perfect stroll after you hit up the Bovine Bakery!

A few other good ones…

Bolinas Beach, Marshall Beach, North/South Beach, Lucas Valley Big Rock, Dillon Beach

Now, get out there and play!
